New paper in Frontiers in Physics about a supercontinuum laser programmable spectrum system


CapturaA new paper is available at the journal Frontiers in Physics entitled Programmable supercontinuum laser spectrum generator based on a liquid-crystal on silicon spatial light modulator.

In this work we present an optical system to spectrally filter a supercontinuum (SC) laser using liquid-crystal on silicon SLMs. The proposed optical system disperses the input laser and the spectrally separated components are projected onto the LCoS-SLM, where the state of polarization of each wavelength is separately modulated. Finally, recombining the modulated spectral components results in an output laser source where the spectrum can be controlled dynamically from a computer. The system incorporates two branches to independently control the visible (VIS) and the near infrared (NIR) spectral content, thus providing a SC laser source from 450 nm to 1600 nm with programmable spectrum.

We expect this new ability for controlling at will the wide spectra of the SC laser sources can be extremely useful for biological imaging applications.

This work was done with our former Master students Jordi Gomis and Pedro Martínez, and with Dr. Aarón Cofre after completing his PhD Thesis.

Special Section in Optical Engineering on Spatial Light Modulators


TheOENG2 special section on Spatial Light Modulators (SLMs) – Devices and Applications has been published in the Optical Engineering issue corresponding to April 2020.

Ignacio Moreno and María Del Mar Sanchez-Lopez are Guest Editors of this special section of the journal, together with Prof. Andrew Forbes and Prof. Yoshio Hayasaky.

Revista Española de Física highlights our technique to generate vector beams

New paper on Optics Letters with a design for an achromatic retarder system with tunable retardance

We published a new paper in Optics Letters entitled Achromatic linear retarder with tunable retardance.

In this work we present a universal design and proof-of-concept of a tunable linear retarder of uniform wavelength response in a broad spectral range. It consists of two half-wave retarders (HWR) between two quarter-wave retarders (QWRs), where the uniform retardance can be tuned continuously by simply rotating one of the HWRs. A proof-of-concept of this design is built by using commercially available Fresnel rhomb retarders that provide retardation with almost wavelength uniformity in the visible and near infrared from 450 to 1550 nm. The system is experimentally demonstrated to control the state of polarization of a super-continuum laser.

The work has been developed in collaboration with Asticio Vargas, from Universidad de la Frontera, Chile. And it is part of the PhD thesis of Abdelghafour Messaadi.

Pascuala Garcia promoted to Full Professor at the Department of Optics of University of Valencia


Oposicon PasIn 2017, October 23th and 24th, Pascuala Garcia passed her last exam for the promotion to Full Professor of Optics at the Department of Optics & Optometry & Vision Sciences, of the University of Valencia.

2016 Calendar on Women in Light Science and Light Technology


InvestigadorasThe 2016 calendar on Women in Light Science and Light Technology has been launched.

Coordinated by Pascuala Garcia and with the participation of Maria del Mar Sánchez, this calendar summarizes the Exhibition on Women in Light Science and Light Technology, developed with the support of SEDOPTICA, RSEF, and SPIE among others, in commemoration of the International Year of Light.

This exhibition promotes the visibility of 12 women who contributed significantly to the development of light science and technology. Each month is devoted to one of these famous researchers.

Pascuala Garcia and María M. Sánchez-Lopez launch the IYL ‘Women in Light Science’ exhibition

Two of the objectives of the United Nations in the declaration of 2015 as the International Year of Light are “to promote women’s empowerment in science” and “to promote education amongst young people”. Following both lines, the WOMEN IN PHYSICS GROUP of RSEF – Real Sociedad Española de Física, in collaboration with SEDOPTICA – the Spanish Optical Society, have composed an exhibition with the life aspects and scientific contribution of 12 women researchers who have contributed to fundamental discoveries in Optics and Photonics.
